Making the Distinction

To achieve a professional looking and unique website can take a large amount of time and resources - simply creating the design features alone can take several weeks for a large custom designed site - and that doesn't take in to account any programming required behind the scenes. Depending on the project, sometimes a single web development can take weeks or even months.

What this Means in Practice...

This means that the critical part to designing and building a website really is right at the start of the design process - where the client specifies with the web designer exactly what it is they want.

Be prepared to spend time and effort ensuring that you and your account manager knows exactly what you require right at the start. A misunderstanding at the starting brief might cost thousands of dollars and weeks of time to correct. Contrast this with corrections made to misunderstandings that occurr towards the end of a project, and the consequences are likely to be significantly less. 

Therefore...

It may well be that a simple brochure site made from a template is all that's needed once the requirements have been discussed in full and every piece of functionality needed has been broken down. However, it's still very important to spend time finding out right at the start!
